I've seen a few hypothetical questions on here and Jalop before... but a friend literally just emailed me this 20 minutes ago. I thought there is no better place than Oppo and Jalop to get an answer. Nothing hypothetical about this one, I know this guy and he will definitely be buying two cars for the price he mentioned. (Note: he currently drives an '11 Acura TL, he's late 20s, he likes cars, but I wouldn't say he's an enthusiast.)
Here's the unedited email:
You have $45k to spend on two used cars.
Car 1: Must be reliable (preferably pre-owned certified), warranty, hold 5 passengers very comfortably (full size sedan, 4 door pick-up truck etc, and cannot be too flashy. This car will be used to drive clients around town. These clients do not want to know that you make a good living
Car 2: Night & weekend car. Fast as shit. Not a bmw. 2 doors or 4 doors. Nothing that will be in the shop all of the time.
GO!
So, what say you Jalops?
Edit: Just heard back... I think he is leaning toward import for car #2... he mentioned Porsche (pic related), S4, or S2000

You can pick up a CPO Sonata for 15-17k use the rest for A lightly used V8 Mustang or Camaro

Car 1: CPO Buick Regal (if he can find one). Not fancy enough to set people off, but comfortable enough to keep clients happy. Could also substitute for a CPO Malibu or Altima. Basically any innocuous, midsize fleet fodder.
Car 2: CPO Mustang GT, Camaro SS, Challenger R/T. Probably the least-expensive "fast" you can get right now.

I'm thinking a CPO Mazda3 or Mazda6 and a C6 Corvette.

Car 1: 5th gen Subaru Legacy GT
Car 2: Fourth Gen F-body

Car 1:
Pontiac G8 GT- certified used, understated, has powa, easy to maintain, comfortable. Lets say you found a really nice one for $25,000
Car 2:
$20,000 budget....hmmmmmmm
I would say go with a stock as a rock 2003-2004 Mustang Cobra. Plenty fun and can be had in a drop top if desired. Will run forever if maintained.

Car 1:
$~10,000, get it from a car service who has maintained and babied it. It's still an old, unremarkable car, but it definitely is comfortable and does the job well. They might mistake it (if they don't know anything) for a used $20,000 car, but they'll never mistake it for a new $40,000 car.
Car 2:
Buy it for $5000, spend $15000 on a crate motor, $10000 on suspension/brakes, and $5000 on the aerodynamics, interior, body and restoration, including removing the ugly 5mph crash bumpers.
If you build it right, for that money, you can have 600-700 reliable HP on pump gas, 2400-2600lbs, and a strong racing suspension that won't destroy itself. You may have to wait (if you don't do work yourself) 2-3 months for it to come together, but once its done, if you do it right, it's the best (reliable) speed for dollar.
Or, in other words, you'll have a car as fast as you are able to drive it without wrecking . $35000 into a 280z, if you can drive it, will go in a straight line faster than anything you can buy showroom stock, (and faster than most modified cars) but still be able to take a track exceedingly fast as well.

1) A used 2008 Chrysler 300 touring (Looks classy, feels great, but also a Chrysler, so makes it seem like you are classy, but also adhere to a budget) 14k
2) Now the fun part, that leaves you with roughly 31k, since he said hes leaning towards imports, if he must have one, might I suggest, a mark iv supra
One in good condition, a turbo, will run you about 16k. And that leaves you with 15k left to do whatever mods he would want.

1) Reliable, comfy and inexpensive with 4 doors? How about a Honda Accord for $15k?
This gives us 30k left to play with, should open up plenty of options :D
How about a Mustang GT, l ike this one. A Camaro SS , or C6 Corvette , M3, or even an M6.
Lots and lots of examples of all of those....except the M6, and that one may be iffy on reliability anyway, still hard to get cooler than a V10 for just under $30k :D

1. Subaru Outback, you can get a loaded 2011 2.5 auto for around $20k
2. The porsche 911 3.2 Carrera just picks itself , doesn't it?
